Understanding Body Composition Standards
What is the Army Tape Test?
The Army tape test measures your body fat percentage using neck, waist, and hip (for women) measurements. It's used when soldiers exceed height/weight screening tables. The test uses circumference measurements and a formula to estimate body fat percentage, which must be below maximum allowable standards.
How to Measure Correctly
• Neck: Measure just below Adam's apple
• Waist: Measure at navel level (relaxed)
• Hip (women only): Measure at widest point
• Use a non-stretching tape measure
• Take measurements in the morning
• Have someone else take measurements for accuracy
Maximum Body Fat Standards
Men:
• Ages 17-20: 20%
• Ages 21-27: 22%
• Ages 28-39: 24%
• Ages 40+: 26%
Women:
• Ages 17-20: 30%
• Ages 21-27: 32%
• Ages 28-39: 34%
• Ages 40+: 36%
Tips to Reduce Body Fat
• Create a small calorie deficit (300-500 calories/day)
• Increase protein intake (0.8-1g per pound of bodyweight)
• Strength train 3-4 times per week
• Add 2-3 cardio sessions weekly
• Stay hydrated (half your bodyweight in ounces)
• Get 7-8 hours of quality sleep
Why Body Composition Matters
Maintaining proper body composition improves physical performance, reduces injury risk, and enhances combat readiness. Lower body fat percentages generally correlate with better endurance, strength-to-weight ratio, and overall military performance. It's also linked to better long-term health outcomes.
What Happens If You Don't Meet Standards
Failing to meet body fat standards may result in:
• Enrollment in the Army Body Composition Program
• Required nutrition counseling
• Mandatory physical training
• Monthly progress assessments
• Potential administrative action if standards aren't met within required timeframes
